If you have a toothache:
Tooth pain can be caused by a number of issues, including cavities, infections, or abscesses. If you have a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm salt water and take over-the-counter pain relievers as needed. Applying a cold compress to the outside of your cheek can also help reduce swelling until we can care for your tooth.
If you have a chipped or broken tooth:
A cracked or broken tooth can expose sensitive inner layers, leading to pain or further damage. If you have a chipped a tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water, save any tooth fragments, and apply gauze if there’s bleeding. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling until you see us.
If you have a knocked-out tooth:
When you’ve had a tooth knocked out, time is of the essence. Hold your tooth by the crown (avoid touching its root), rinse it gently, and try to place it back into the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in a container of milk or saline solution and see us within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving your tooth.
If you have a lost filling or crown:
A lost filling or crown leaves your tooth vulnerable to further damage, so temporarily cover the exposed area with dental cement (available at pharmacies) or sugar-free chewing gum to protect it until we see you.
If you have an abscess:
A dental abscess is a painful, pus-filled infection can lead to serious health complications, including the spread of infection, if left untreated. Repeatedly rinse your mouth with salt water to reduce pain, and see us ASAP to eradicate the infection.
